Eyeing Design and The Amateur Advantage

The colorful Academy Bed and Breakfast downtown Annapolis MD

According to photographer Stephen Rosenbach being an amateur is not a bad thing or a disgrace, and when it comes to his field, it even offers some advantages. Amateur literally translates from French as “lover of”. This love for a subject, be it music or art, many times allows someone the freedom to approach a subject without any preconceived ideas or self-imposed restrictions. When applying this idea to photographing architecture, Stephen believes amateurs notice specific pieces and parts of a structure that others may overlook. The sum of the parts of architecture dictates its style. Even though, an amateur might not know the technical name of certain architectural elements or be able to accurately identify a structures style, their interest in a building frees them to simply see the beauty of its spiraling iron railings or the façade’s stonework. With a little guidance, an amateur can even learn to capture those details in a photograph.

Mr. Rosenbach has always loved architecture. In fact it was his admiration of architecture that led him to develop walking tours for others interested in learning about the architectural features of some of his favorite cities and cultivate some photographic skills to capture those element. Capturing inspiring architectural images and design is what Appitecture’s Eyeing Design Gallery is all about.

So, recently Stephen joined our Eyeing Design team to lead a photo tour of the historic city of Annapolis, Maryland. With his help, this is what our cameras were able to capture!
